EDITOR’S NOTE: For those of you not in the know, 6NBlog’s 25 Days of Halloween celebration stemmed from us wanting to do something like a “31 Days of Halloween,” but not realizing it until six days later. But fear not, from now until the 31st we’ll be giving you a movie a day to devour. These aren’t all the scariest or best horror flicks we’ve seen, but they’re all 6NBlog worthy for one reason or another. Enjoy.
There’s not too much to say about the Leprechaun series, other than it really just kind of stinks. The 1993 original has its redeeming qualities, mostly because it introduced the world to the character (played by notable short person Warwick Davis) as well as Jennifer Aniston (in her first starring role). The original isn’t exactly scary, but actually comes from the same vein as the Nightmare series in that it can be comedic at times as well. Davis mixes creepiness with humor and the viewer knows writer/director Mark Jones isn’t taking things too seriously either.
Plot? There’s not much of one. Basically, Davis’ Leprechaun character is locked up in a crate for a number of years before being let out by Aniston and her family when they move into their new house. The Leprechaun is after his long-lost pot of gold and Aniston’s character and friends know the key to getting it, so chases and death ensues. Meh.
Anyways, this movie’s packed with “wait, I know him from somewhere” supporting performances, including Mark Holton (Francis in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Tubby in Teen Wolf) as well as Robert Gorman (Walter in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, Clark in Rookie of the Year). There’s a surprising amount of gore, but no T&A (Aniston keeps her Jennifers locked up in her blouse the whole time). The flick spawned multiple sequels, but the little green dude hasn’t been heard from since 2003′s Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood. And yes, it got that bad.
If you’ve got a thing for Aniston, give it a shot (I think you can actually find the whole movie on youtube). If not, skip it.
