Ty Burr actually, sort of, doesn’t mind Boondock II

I’m going to see Boondock Saints II sometime in the next week. It’s playing at Legacy Place; it’s so close it has to be mandatory. I was actually really surprised to see Sony is distributing this flick not only in Boston but all around New England, obviously a pull to get all of the local Boondock diehards away from Hot Topic and into the theaters. Still, it’s close so why not drop in to see how Troy Duffy’s shtick has improved in a ten years?

The first five minutes that were released earlier in the week were dreadful, but the Boston Globe‘s Ty Burr actually says the movie isn’t a complete disaster. Its Tomato Meter on RT has climbed from 14% to a modest 31% today, and if enough critics review it I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets up as high as 40 or 45%. Still not Certified Fresh, but an accomplish in its own right.

Head over to the Globe‘s website and read Burr’s review; he basically confirms what we all have feared. While Duffy looks to have learned a thing or two about filmmaking in the last decade, Clifton Collins Jr.’s character may be more annoying than Rocco from the first film, Julie Benz proves she is no Willem Dafoe, and the supporting cast is back from the original to act poorly once again.

At least there’s Judd Nelson to believe in. And that’s maybe worth the price of admission alone.
