Charlie Manuel left Pedro in too long and the Yankees took advantage, so I switched over to FX to check out the new comedy “The League.” It had its moments, but it’s nowhere near as funny as “It’s Always Sunny” (which had another phenomenal episode tonight). Still, I’ll probably check in next week too.
The storyline centers around a group of friends who play in a fantasy football league together and take it way too seriously, leaving their marriages, careers, and kids on the side all for fantasy glory and possession of a trophy affectionately called Shiva. The cast is full of character actors (Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, among others) you may have seen in other things before, and for the most part they do an okay job. Also, the amazingly hot Leslie Bibb co-stars as the main character’s wife, but I’m not sure if she’s going to be in it for the long haul.
The humor’s pretty offensive and crude, which could work if the series gets anywhere and the writers keep up. All in all, if you’re a fantasy football fan and you like pube jokes, then maybe this is the show for you. Plus, there’s not a whole lot on at 10:30 on Thursdays, so maybe give it a shot even if you’re not.
Besides the show, I just want to take a moment to gloat about my dominating fantasy football team that currently stands at 6-1. I’m going to get some shit about this obviously, but I’m out in front and I’m certainly not looking back. I needed a third receiver badly and took a shot on Sidney Rice a few weeks back, and it’s turned out to be probably one of my best waiver wire pickups ever. I’m going the distance this year, kids.
That is until I break down like Barbaro sometime in the playoffs. It’s going to happen. I’m saying second round. Place your bets now.
