I’m not going to offer up a lot of analysis here, because frankly this one was over before it started. The lowly Tennessee Titans came into a snowy Gillette Stadium yesterday afternoon and were completely destroyed by your New England Patriots, 59-0.
The Pats broke all sorts of team/NFL records in the game, as Brady and the offense did basically whatever they wanted to do through the first half and briefly into the third quarter before Tom took a seat and let Brian Hoyer finish out the game. According to the Boston Herald, the Patriots broke the following league records: Most touchdown passes in a quarter (Brady, with five in the 2nd) and Largest halftime lead: (45 points). They also smashed the following team records: Most points in a game (59), Most points in a half (45), Most points in a quarter (35 in the 2nd), Total yards (619), Most passing yards in a half (Brady with 345 in the first), and Most passing touchdowns in a half (Brady with five in the first).
I could type out all of the stats for the Patriots offense, but really you should just go to the boxscore here to see them for yourself. But what it really boils down to is that the Pats took it to not only one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, but also probably one of the worst in recent memory. Tennessee is just not a very good team, and it showed. I feel sorry for Jeff Fisher because he’s had a really bad start to the year on and off the field (McNair’s passing), and he seems like a well respected coach and nice guy. However if things keep going the way they are going for him and his team, it’s hard to see him not getting fired or resigning by year’s end.
Just a few tidbits quickly:
- Sebastian Vollmer filled in nicely for the injured Matt Light at left tackle, and showed that he might be ready for a starting nod come next season.
- Laurence Maroney (16 carries for 123 yds. and a touchdown) had a surprising performance running the ball in place of Sammy Morris who was injured early in the game. However the Tennessee defense didn’t even get off the plane, so take his numbers with a grain of salt. In a post game interview he said the defense “parted like the Red Sea,” so it actually is a testament to the offensive line for really kicking ass up front.
- Brady (29 of 34, 380 yards, six TDs) looked like the Brady of old, hooking up with Randy Moss and Wes Welker all day, but again take into account how miserable the TN defense was. However, given the conditions the game was played in, it was still a great performance.
- Kerry Collins sucks. That’s basically all you have to know. So does Vince Young. With the Titans wearing the throwback Oilers uniforms yesterday, you have to wonder if Fisher’s going to put a call into Warren Moon one of these days.
- While the defense played well throughout earning the shutout, Chris Johnson still racked up 128 yards on the ground for the Titans. They’ve got it easy this weekend too in London against Tampa Bay, but they will be tested in a couple of weeks when Miami heads to town following the bye week.
- Sure, things look great now, but we head into a miserable three week stretch come November 15th, with trips to Indy and New Orleans as well as a matchup with the Jets nestled in the middle Week 10. However the Jets look to be in the middle of quite the funk after getting beaten by Buffalo in overtime yesterday.
So that’s about it, really. There’s going to be a lot of confidence heading into their trip across the pond to play Tampa at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, but there’s still a tough road ahead. I’m interested to see how we respond against the Wildcat on November 8th, but if they can neutralize Miami’s attack then we can crown the Pats AFC East champs right then and there.
