Platinum Dunes released the first teaser trailer for the Nightmare on Elm Street remake today, and as far as teasers go, this one shows a lot and is actually pretty damn good. That’s one skill I think that the PD guys have in their pockets, they know how to make a goddamn trailer. Go on youtube and check out the first trailers for the Texas Chainsaw remakes, or the Friday the 13th remake that was out in May. They’re generally creepy and really do the job well in selling the flick.
But unfortunately, when those trailers are stretched out into full length features, that’s usually where the shit hits the fan. I’m hoping this is where the trend turns. Michael Bay and his cronies listened to the fans’ cries and roped in Jackie Earle Haley to play Krueger, and while I don’t think I’ve heard of any of the teenagers in the cast–does it really matter?
You get some nice backstory thrown in, a hint of a Clancy Brown cameo (he’s in fucking everything these days), and just enough of a full glimpse of Freddy to wet your appetite. And I’m all for Jackie reimagining Krueger instead of blatantly trying to emulate Robert Englund, but what’s with the voice? He sounds like a lovechild of Billy Bob Thornton in Sling Blade and Sheriff Buford T. Justice after a stroke.
