Are the Sox in trouble? Does a bear shit in the woods?

After getting their asses handed to them for three games by the 2009 AL East Division Champion New York Yankees over the weekend, the Red Sox welcomed Toronto into the friendly confines of Fenway Park and got proceeded to…get their asses handed to them by the Blue Jays tonight.

What the shit is going on? Shouldn’t we be playing our best baseball of the season with the playoffs only a week or so away? Beckett was scratched tonight with a bad back, The Talented Mr. Lester was plunked in the knee on Friday, Clay Buchholz is in the middle of the best stretch of his career but it could hit the fan at any moment, our offense sucks, we have no money, no jobs, our pets’ heads are falling off! This isn’t comforting news with a series with Anaheim staring us right  in the face.

Let’s look at some numbers.

After an 8-0 start against New York this year, we’re 1-9 since. In those ten games, Boston has averaged only a little over four runs a game, and that’s skewed because of two blowouts. We scored less than three runs in five of those games (all losses), and were shut out twice. With the way the Yankees offense is hitting these days, that’s too much pressure to put on the pitching staff.

Granted, we have been beating the shit out of crappy teams since the All Star Break, but we’ve had a cup cake schedule and love to shit ourselves occasionally (against KC, for example). I’m still under the impression that this team is going to turn it on again once games start to matter, but it’s still scary thinking that the Yankees just keep winning and we’re just making more problems for ourselves with the playoffs rapidly approaching.

PS: Thank God Texas just sucks, because if we weren’t out in front so far we’d certainly would have crapped the bed against a team with some balls. It’s going to be tough getting out of the first round while we’re on life support, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
