I watched Slater in that new ABC show for a full 40 minutes last night, and I gotta say I never thought it would be that bad. I mean the whole backstory is paper thin…a volunteer group dedicated to discovering the identity of John/Jane Doe murder victims? What’s the point? Zed’s dead, baby. Zed’s dead.
And how do they get from place to place on such a shoe-string budget? They went from Chicago to Iowa and back last night. Do they have some sort of silent partner? How does one get sponsorship for a volunteer group of dead people investigators? Am I reading too far into this?
I have to admit, though, Slater had some pretty solid lines. For example, there was this gem: “This is where it ended for her, and where it begins for us.” Unreal. And his Jack Nicholson impersonation is still spot on, although I guess he calls that…speaking.
But fear not, cop drama fans. “Law & Order: SVU” returns to NBC at 9:00 tonight for an all new season, meaning the amount of Ice-T and Richard Belzer in your lives is about to go up tenfold. Because no one abducts a child, commits rape, films and distributes child pornography, or commits domestic abuse on Ice-T and Belzer’s watch. Nobody.
