Here is a pic from the set of David O. Russell’s The Fighter, the new boxing flick starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. Peter from Slashfilm posted it last night.

The story of The Fighter centers on the rise of “Irish” Micky Ward, a boxer from Lowell who came from relative obscurity to become one the best junior welterweight fighters in the world. Ward of course is best known for his three fights against Arturo Gatti, which many Boxing historians call three of the greatest fights in history. I watched Ward/Gatti II and III live, if you ever get a chance to see any of them on youtube or elsewhere, they’re definitely worth the viewing.

Bale plays Ward’s half-brother Dickie Ecklund, a former welterweight contender (and Ward’s trainer) who turned to drugs after his career was over. At first glance it looks like Bale has poured himself into another role, as he looks suitably skinny and drawn as a recovering crack addict.

Follow the link to see more pictures from the set, as well as a couple of short videos of Wahlberg and Bale training with the real Ward and Ecklund. The Fighter is set to drop sometime next year.
