Spike’s new season of The Ultimate Fighter premieres at 10 p.m. tonight, I’ll probably sneak a peek of it at some point after the Red Sox game. The big story this season is the “arrival” of Kimbo Slice into the UFC game. Although he’s made his official MMA debut while with the now bankrupt Elite XC ( going 3-1 and losing to Seth Petruzelli in pretty convincing fashion), many UFC fighters as well as UFC Prez Dana White have been critical of Slice as a legitimate MMA fighter.

Former UFC Heavyweight champ Frank Mir had this to say about Kimbo to Five Ounces of Pain:

“…every time Kimbo fights it sets the sport back. Guys like that just reinforce the idea in the public’s eye that we are all blood thirsty barbarians who just want to pummel each other and that there is no skill required.”

White has also been skeptical of Slice’s ability, but tonight he’s giving Kimbo a chance to redeem himself in the UFC’s eyes as he will be one of the 16 competitors in the new season. White has said that the only way Slice will earn a UFC contract is if he wins the competition.

Here’s a preview. If Kimbo’s pectoral twitching skills are any indication, the rest of the field is in deep trouble:

I don’t know what to think of Kimbo’s chances, mostly because I don’t watch UFC that often, and I don’t own any TapOut gear. But one thing I do know is that reality shows about hungry fighters trying to make it into the big show calls for high drama. I mean, doesn’t everybody remember “Tough Enough”?
