There’s been a lot of hooplah in the last couple of days about this new Facebook Fan Check application eventually leading to a virus. Apparently Facebook is something popular with the kids these days, like Skip-It or Bubble Tape.
I haven’t been tagged or added in any of these Fan Checks, mostly because I’m a conceited introvert who hates human contact and am only interested in myself and my own well being. But I’ve seen them in my News Feed, as well as several of these types of Status Updates:
FANCHECK IS A VIRUS! It only takes 24 hours and then you’re fucked!!! I was tagged two days ago and today I woke up and my bank account was empty, my dog was missing, and a scary little girl covered in black shit crawled out of my TV and tried to pull me into a well!!
So, in the best interest of my readers, and since my only advertising is through facebook (i.e. spread the word and help me out), I’ve decided to do a little detective work, Encyclopedia Brown style.
All day I walked around town and picked up clues, checked out spooky old houses, questioned the town drunk, got in trouble with my mom, etc., and all in all…I didn’t find shit.
But then I did a simple google search and found this little number from the always reliable Christian Science Monitor, as well as their link to a helpful youtube video from this British Mac user:
While I can’t find anything directly from the Facebook mothership on the subject, from that report and a couple of others I’ve read, there is no real threat. But more importantly, Fan Check isn’t real anyways. Facebook has always said it will never let out who checks your profiles, so any apps that claim to do so are likely bad news. Also, be careful of what you click regarding the virus, as it could lead to actual real viruses apparently. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.
Anyways, if you’re that concerned with who’s looking at your profile, you’re likely a selfish douche to begin with anyways. Get over yourself. No one gives a shit about you, or your thoughts on movies, Boston sports, and pop culture 24 hours a day/seven days a week. They care about mine.
